Morphology: An under shrub with slender erect branches. The leaves are simple, oval shaped and papery. The flowers are white, tubular and have sticky hairs on the calyx. The flowers are arranged in a raceme, at the axis of the leaves or at the tip of the stem. The fruits are called capsules, which have sticky glands. The seeds are dark brown/black and flattened.

Medicinal uses


Pungent, astringent, diuretic, germicidal, vesicant and abortifacient. It overcomes flatulence, edema, piles, cough, worms, diseases due to Vata and Kapha, hemorrhoids, and colic.


The roots are acrid, astringent, thermogenic, anthelmintic, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, abortifacient, alterant, antiperiodic, carminative, digestive, sudorific, narcotic, gastric and nervous stimulant and rejuvenating. It is useful in dyspepsia, colic, inflammation, cough, bronchitis, helminthiasis, haemorrhoids, elephantiasis, chronic and intermittent fever, leprosy, leucaderma, ringworm, scabies, hepatosplenomegaly, amenorrhoea, odontalgia, vitiated conditions of vata and kapha and anaemia.

Home remedies:

  1. It is a good appetizer and should be given in powder form in the dose of 1-2 gm along with 5 gm powder of Mustaka in lose of appetite, indigestion and diarrhea.
  2. Massage of oil, prepared with Chitraka is so beneficial in joint disorders like Sandhivata, Amavata, etc.
  3. Its decoction in the dose of 5 10 ml. should be given in urinary stone.


Recent clinical studies show that Chitraka possesses higher anti-H. pylori activity. It prolongs the bleeding time by altering platelet adhesiveness and the coagulation. It is also concluded in another study that plumbagin chemical constituent of Chitraka can inhibit cell proliferation, block cell cycle and induce apoptosis of APL cell line NB4 cells. It can be used safely in human acute promyelocytic leukemia.
